LOS HERMANOS CUBERO
The idea of mixing the Spanish folklore music with the genuinely American bluegrass is something that was possibly only in Los Hermanos Cubero’s mind. The result is attractive and surprising in equal parts. The Alcarreños brothers Quique and Roberto mixed with mastery their influences and gave form to them through their two voices, a guitar and a mandolin.
The sound: For 25 cents, name one single record by Cloud Nothings that is not exceptional. Bingo: the correct answer is “there isn’t one”, because with five albums under their belt (the latest still to come) in a career of just ten years, Cloud Nothings can boast in all modesty that they have not put one foot wrong. Since that eponymous debut in 2011, which was as irresistible as it was unruly and lo-fi, the recent Life Without Sound (Wichita Recordings, 2017) in which they explored the more melodic side of their indie rock with hints of post-hardcore, the soundings of the depths of the existence of its leader and alma mater Dylan Baldi are exciting, revealing and exhilarating all at once. Few guitar bands are as stimulating as Cloud Nothings nowadays. The fury: In between, of course, their two most iconic albums: Attack on Memory (Wichita Recordings, 2012) the explosive cyclogenesis of youthful anguish explicit in the titles of its tracks (No Future/No Past, Wasted Days, Stay Useless) and Here and Nowhere Else (Wichita Recordings, 2014) a sublimation of that desperation wrapped in melodies which are increasingly pop that transform their songs into truly unpredictable artefacts. Pogos, choruses, screaming in the background and fists in the air. Now, with Last Building Burning just around the corner (it comes out on October 19th), they promise an album that reflects the energy of their live shows, the desired explosion: “seven short, and one long, bursts of intense, controlled chaos”. What could be better for a record like this than touring venues? Tick: on February 21st in Donostia (Dabadaba), on 22nd in Madrid (Sala 0), 23rd in Valencia (La Marina) and on 24th in Barcelona (La (2) de Apolo), we will scream with Cloud Nothings as if it were the very first time.
For Roosevelt anachronisms don’t exist. Calling your project the same name as the 32nd President of the USA? Tick. Blending disco, funk and soul with flowing pop melodies and hints of sugary Balearic music? Double tick. Doing this live in organic formation (with drums, guitars and keyboards) while totally focused on the dance floor? Two blue ticks. The German artist Marius Lauber has spent his whole life collecting ticks at each step he takes. Before starting his own project he was already resident at the Kompakt Total Confusion night together with Superpitcher and Michael Mayer, but he soon discovered the glory of pop. With it he convinced the Greco-Roman label (co-founded by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip) to release that refreshing sip of iced tea, ie his debut EP, Elliot, in 2013. Three years later, now on City Slang, came his homonymous LP, that is from beginning to end like a delightful boat trip, underpinned by melodic nocturnal breezes, warm waves of synthesisers and rhythms that guarantee total stability. With his second album, Young Romance, released last year, Roosevelt has reinforced his position in the first division of this genre that includes big names such as Hot Chip, Caribou and Metronomy. Marius Lauber’s band will give us the golden opportunity to get on board on Thursday 28th November at Razzmatazz 2, after the cancellation of his visit programmed for last November due to a last minute health issue. All aboard!
